Great River HR is looking for our next Vice President

August 13, 2026

Great River HR is looking for our next Vice President — and maybe it’s you. ❤️

This is a hard post for me to write, but due to unexpected family commitments, our current Vice President has made the difficult decision to step away from the Board. That leaves us with an important seat to fill — and an opportunity for someone in our HR community who is ready to get more involved.

Our Vice President/President-Elect serves as my partner in leading Great River SHRM, is part of our Executive Leadership Team, and gets a behind-the-scenes look at all things chapter leadership. One of the VP's primary responsibilities is helping us build great programming by researching, selecting, and coordinating speakers for our events.

But this role is really about more than booking speakers. It's an opportunity to lead!

Maybe you love our HR community and have been looking for a way to give back.

Maybe you'd like more leadership experience but haven't had the opportunity in your current role.

Maybe you realized you just have way too much free time in your daily HR job (  ) and what better way to fill it than to take on something else...

You'll build relationships throughout our HR community, expand your network, have opportunities to participate with the Iowa SHRM State Council, help shape the future of Great River HR — and yes, there are some fun perks along the way, too.

And you will NOT be figuring it out alone.

We have a FANTASTIC and supportive Board, and I'm committed to making sure our next VP has the time and support they need to learn the role.

There are two potential paths:

Option 1: Serve as VP for the remainder of 2026 and step into the President role January 1, 2027. If that's the right path, I'll serve as your VP during 2027 to help make the transition successful.

Option 2: I'll remain President through 2027 while you serve as VP, giving you another full year to learn the ropes. You would then begin your two-year term as President January 1, 2028.

The time commitment varies throughout the year, but generally averages approximately 10–15 hours per month, with additional time around major events and initiatives.

Interested individuals must be current SHRM national members and Great River SHRM members in good standing.

The complete position description is available on our website so you can take a look at the responsibilities before deciding whether this might be for you.

Interested? Please email me directly by Friday, August 28 at [email protected].

We'll then schedule conversations with interested candidates and members of our Executive Board.

And if you're reading this thinking, “Not me...but I know someone who would be fantastic,” please send this their way.

You don't have to already know how to be President. We'll teach you. You just have to be willing to lead!
