When building a DEI program from scratch, you must understand your organization’s current state.  Work with leadership to first define what DEI means to your organization, gather your organization’s people data, and use the resources offered in this program to make the first steps in creating a successful DEI program.

About the Presenters: 

Lena Holland: Joining Royal Neighbors in 2012, Lena Holland serves as Senior Director, Human Resources, overseeing Human Resources and Facilities. 

With more than 15 years of experience in HR, Lena has held leadership roles within the financial, manufacturing, and distribution industries with responsibilities in employee and labor relations, recruitment, performance and talent management, employee and organizational development, change management, safety, and rewards and recognition.

In addition to graduating magna cum laude from St. Ambrose University, Davenport, IA, Lena achieved her Senior Human Resources designations through SHRM and HRCI. She also holds the ALMI and ACS designations from the Life Office Management Institute and holds a Six Sigma Green Belt through the Honeywell Operating System.

Lena is the management liaison to the Compensation Committee of the Royal Neighbors Board of Directors. In addition, she serves as Secretary of the Board of Directors for Great River Human Resources Association, a SHRM chapter, and most recently was appointed as Diversity Director for 2021.

Growing up in a military family, she traveled the US and Asia throughout her childhood before settling in the Quad Cities area. When not at work, Lena enjoys spending time with her family, taking road trips and visiting historical sites.


Claudia Schabel: Claudia Schabel, Founder, President and CEO of Schabel Solutions Inc., has been on a 20-plus-year mission to raise awareness and consciousness about social justice, race relations and equity.

Schabel Solutions Inc. staff have 25-plus-years of experience as Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI), human resources and compliance practitioners, largely with Fortune 100 and Fortune 500 companies. The team combines its expertise with significant international experience and multicultural backgrounds to help organizations address the dangers of unmitigated unconscious bias, untapped talent, missed market opportunities and stagnant innovation.

Schabel Solutions Inc. uses Claudia’s signature framework and people centric tools to deliver innovative and customizable DEI consulting, training, public speaking and coaching services to businesses, governmental, educational and not-for-profit organizations.

Claudia is a commissioner on the City of Des Moines Civil and Human Rights Commission and serves on Iowa’s SHRM State Council as the Director of Diversity and volunteers for several organizations in the community.

After growing up in Brazil and working in Japan, Claudia has made Des Moines, Iowa her home with her spouse, Brad, and their always playful English Golden Retriever, Stormy.


Michelle Hyde: The word most often used to describe Michelle Hyde is enthusiastic. There is no doubt Michelle will bring her enthusiasm for training and development. A seasoned storyteller, Michelle’s interactive and upbeat style will keep your team energized and engaged.

 

Michelle’s expertise is in diversity and inclusion, employee experience, coaching, and event planning. She skillfully facilitates difficult conversations while optimizing learning using current training methods, active engagement, and tailoring to the needs of an individual. She has worked in the fields of financial services, manufacturing, higher education, and national health nonprofits.

Some of Michelle's key accomplishments include: Co-led LGBT Market strategy for all aspects of Fortune 100 organization’s LGBT Market initiatives; created and executed virtual and in-person trainings on client relationship-building, branding and event planning for 70+ regional chapters for a national health nonprofit; assisted in the global rollout of a new employee experience survey methodology and software.

Michelle earned her master’s degree in liberal sciences (training and development) from the University of Illinois-Springfield, Springfield, IL and her bachelor’s degree in communications (public relations) from Bradley University, Peoria, IL.


Liz McCredden:

Liz is the HR Director for 3 companies under Ovation Holdings, Inc. Liz serves on the board as GRHRA’s Treasurer and Co-DEI Director. She also serves as the Conference Director for Iowa State Council. Liz holds her SHRM-SCP and SPHR and is very passionate about the HR profession. Born and raised in the Midwest, she proudly graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.


Mark Gastmann:

Local Veteran Employment Representative - LVER, Jobs for Veterans State Grant – JVSG,

Illinois Department of Employment Security - IDES.

As a Local Veteran Employment Representative (LVER) for the State of Illinois, Mark advocates for the hiring of veterans, outreach to inform employers of State and Federal programs, tax incentives, training opportunities, internships and create relationships with employers to fill their open positions that link qualified veterans with meaningful employment. 

Mark was deployed in the United States Air Force Security Forces during the Vietnam era from 1974-1975 and finished his tour in 1980. Assigned to the Strategic Air Command - SAC, he secured B52’s and KC 135’s on priority A & B secure areas that were at the ready to deploy Nuclear weapons.

He also worked in manufacturing as a supervisor for over 20 years and worked several years as a brakeman on the Illinois Central Gulf Railroad and Amtrak out of Freeport, IL to Chicago - Clinton IL, and Madison Wisconsin.

Mark is currently part of the Quad Cities Veteran Network (QCVN) which consists of employers, veterans, educational institutions and Quad City community services that meet once a month to network for veterans, transitioning active duty and their families to fulfill their needs in the community delivering career services, community information, training, educational and career opportunities. He also serves as a volunteer for the Employers Support the Guard and Reserve - ESGR, The Moline breakfast Optimist Club, and belongs to Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 669.
