Follow-Up from Dr. Monica Smith

(Presenter from October 16 GRHRA Event)

Presentation: Inclusive Leadership: Remaining Relevant in a Diverse World

At our Ocotber 16 meeting, Dr. Monica Smith mentioned the importance of fostering inclusive leadership into job descriptions. She shared that Augustana includes this kind of verbiage in job descriptions and therefore, she wanted to provide everyone with the full example.

“Being a diverse and inclusive community is central to the college’s Mission and reflected in the strategic plan. We seek applicants with a demonstrated commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment for a diverse student body. Members of underrepresented populations are encouraged to apply”.

The description also included some info regarding workforce demographics and a bit about the Quad Cities.

The phrase “diverse and inclusive community” was hyperlinked to our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion webpage and “strategic plan” was hyperlinked to the college strategic plan.

Spotlight Internship Opportunity

Meet Emily Verhoef

My name is Emily Verhoef. I am currently a student at Purdue University Global obtaining my Graduate Certificate in Industrial Organizational Psychology. I am at the stage of my education where I begin looking for a practicum/field placement. This program is designed to integrate academic knowledge with practical experience, and prepares me for future training in professional psychology.

This program requires that I obtain:

  • 150 hours throughout a 10-week period.

  • Gain firsthand experience in a real organization with Industrial Organizational needs.

  • Apply classroom knowledge.

  • Interact with current management professionals.

I would be starting the field placement in January 2019. The goal is to work alongside a manager within a human resource department. I would be assisting with any daily tasks, projects that are already ongoing, support with workforce development, and workforce morale. The field placement can be unpaid with the understanding that I receive course credit for time spent in the work environment. I would also have to be evaluated at the end of the field placement on the following criteria:

  • Personal attributes

  • Professional development

  • Demonstration of competencies

I look forward to discussing the program further with you in more detail. I am available by phone or email, listed below. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,

Emily Verhoef
