FAQ’s for the 2018 Iowa SHRM Conference

What is the benefit of attending the Iowa State Conference?  Networking with other HR Professionals from across the state,

recertification credits, networking/meeting speakers and professionals, information you can bring back to your workplace.

I've attended quite a few HR conferences. How is this one different? In comparison to a national conference, it lends to better

networking.  At a national conference, I sometimes feel like a goldfish in the ocean and feel like I could get lost in the shuffle.

Other state-level conferences are usually topic-specific, like benefits, compensation, legal, etc., The IA State SHRM Conference

will cover all the topics we need as HR professionals (and some we haven’t thought of) in a smaller group setting.

Do you need to be a SHRM member to attend? No, you do not need to be a SHRM member to attend.

Do I need to attend all 3 days? No, you can attend a combination of events, such as the pre-conference, the pre-conference

and Thursday, Thursday and Friday, or just Thursday or Friday alone.

Is there a better rate for students? Yes, full-time students can attend the conference for $100, and the pre-conference for $75,

which is a large discount!

Is there a cutoff of the current rates? Yes, the late fee will go into place on 9/17, so register before that date to save some money!

How can I volunteer to help? There are volunteer opportunities to help with registration or to announce a speaker at the conference.

Fill out the form found on http://iastateshrmconference.org/volunteer/.  BTW - you must be registered to attend the conference to

volunteer. Each volunteer who completes the volunteer form will receive a free volunteer t-shirt.

As the hotel for the conference is full, what are other good options for accommodations in which GRHRA members a

re taking advantage?  The Marriott, where the conference is being held, is full. Other accommodations near the Marriott

would be the Homewood Suites and Hampton Inn. However, there are a number of other hotels in the IA City/Coralville area.

At any point during the conference, is there a get together for GRHRA members who are attending? In the past, we have

had GRHRA member get-together. As time gets closer, we will put out an email to those who have registered so everyone

can get in touch. There’s also an Exhibitor’s Banquet on Thursday night – this is a place we could all meet and make plans from there.

Are there particular sessions that you recommend we attend based on past experience or knowledge of the speaker?

Everyone’s needs are different.  I strongly suggest everyone takes the time to study the schedule and summaries of the

presentations and plan ahead of time.  I usually go through and mark my 1st and 2nd choice for each time slot and then make

my decision in the moment!
