Substance Abuse in the Workplace - What Employers Need to Know.
The opioid crisis is making national headlines. HR professionals must be proactive in taking steps to keep their organizations safe, while also maintaining awareness of substance abuse that may be occurring. We have invited professionals to join us for the next GRHRA meeting who will give specific advice and tips on how to handle issues that you may have already experienced. Areas of learning include the following:
- Identify the signs of substance abuse
- Understand the underlying issues related to addiction
- Understand the options available to help suffering staff
- Understand the paradoxical duties facing employers

Joseph Lemon founded The Abbey Addiction Treatment Center in 2008. Since that time, The Abbey has been a national leader in the field of mental health and substance abuse treatment.
In addition to overseeing the program at The Abbey, Mr. Lemon engages in a broad range of advocacy projects on behalf of the mental health patient population. He has met with federal and state representatives in both Washington, DC and Des Moines, and has served on the Board of the Iowa Behavioral Health Association.
Mr. Lemon’s career has involved a wide spectrum of industries, including practicing law in Silicon Valley and working for a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals – the second-highest court in the country.
Today, in addition to his work at The Abbey, Mr. Lemon is involved in a variety of diverse projects across 4 different states ranging from hospitality to real estate development & management to historic preservation – including Abbey Station, the former 100-year old train depot in Rock Island, which now serves as a banquet facilityfor wedding receptions and other special events. He recently purchased the former QC campus for Western Illinois University, which was immediately deployed to accommodate Franklin Elementary School (which had been closed for the school year due to a fire).
Mr. Lemon graduated from Brown University with degrees in Political Science and International Relations. He later received his MBA from the University of Oxford (in England), and his law degree from Stanford Law School.
Karen Relf has served as the Program Director at The Abbey since 2013. In that capacity, she manages an interdisciplinary team of healthcare professionals in providing high caliber services to The Abbey’s patients. Prior to joining The Abbey in 2009, Ms. Relf served in an array of capacities at Bethany for Children and Families for over 10 years.
Ms. Relf holds a master’s degree from Western Illinois University; she is also a Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor.
